"It is the Paris edition which set the standard for the popular field of emblem literature (Mortimer, French, no. 13, p. 13). Bramante's design offered an unobstructed prospect from the papal apartments (at left) through the length of the courtyard to the exedra, the semi-circular structure at the right of the image. He came to Stuttgart in 1534 to support a compromise and was criticized for abandoning the position he had held while still in Konstanz.
